Working with list fields
List fields (AKA drop-down lists) in the v10 application have specific behaviors specifically related to them, such as:
If associations (dependencies) are defined for a given list with one or several subsequent fields, the value that you select a given drop-down list conditions the value(s) available in the subsequent lists. This feature is known as "cascading lists"; those fields are configured in individual grids by the administrator.
An example of cascading list fields would be as follows:
Consider the three following list fields:
Country
State
City
In this example, the "State" list is associated to the "Country" list and the "City" list is associated to the "State" list. In this case:
If the "Country" list contains several countries such as United States, Switzerland, China and Germany, then if you select "United States" in the list, the values available in the "State" list will be filtered out according to your selection. In this case, you would only see a list of US States, such as California, New York, Washington, etc. Changing the value selected in the "Country" list would change the values available in the "State" list. For instance, if you were to select Germany in the "Country" list, then the "State list would contain only German states, like "Bavaria", "Berlin", etc.
The values available in the "City" list depend on the value selected in the "State" list. Going back to the example above, if you have selected "United States" in the "Country" list, and then "California" in the "State" list, then the "City" list will only contain cities located in the state of California, such as "Los Angeles", "San Francisco", "Palo Alto", etc.
An additional specific behavior of the list fields in the v10 application is the following:
You can perform a search in a drop-down list by typing a string of characters in the field. As you do so, the system displays the existing values that contain the string you have entered, as illustrated in the following figure:
